Chapter 13

NICK

“I think you’re right, she’s rather shy,” Sarah said.

“I told you she was barely managing to hang out with me.”

I couldn’t help but sound annoyed, though nearly as enraged as I really was. Sarah wouldn’t make a scandal in front of humans if she found out about Dahlia’s true nature; she would wait until she could catch Dahlia alone and then kill her, or worse. That thought made me sick.

I was certain she went to the school deliberately, to spy on me. She used to be very snoopy where I was concerned. She had cornered Katie in the same way before we even officially dated. Maybe David had suggested something to Sarah; that would be worse, and what would happen if they suspected anything?

Calm down, I ordered myself. Becoming even more paranoid was not going to help at all. “Maybe you can convince her to come home one day, you know, to dine.” My stomach twisted, I was certain Dahlia would end up being the dinner instead of the guest. Furious, I suppressed a grunt, close to losing control. A protective, possessive feeling threatened to destroy my composure. It was an effort to calm myself.

“I really doubt it,” I gritted out through clenched teeth.

“Maybe we could even watch a movie—”

“It will not happen,” I spat, unable to suppress the anger. “She’s not an open person; we should respect that, don’t you think? I barely know her, it’s too soon.”

I was surprised at how easy the lie came out. I knew Dahlia better than anyone I had ever met; at least it felt that way.

“Okay, that was just a suggestion,” Sarah said, angrily. “It’s just not right that you stick to one person; especially a mortal. You know from experience how fragile they are; that can end badly.”

Had I heard her right? She kept her eyes on the road; the anger was threatening to take control of me but that would only strengthen her position. She thought I could be too attached to Dahlia, which for some mysterious reason gave her the right to interrogate her.

“You’re right, I can’t close my circle that way; I should get more friends. If their spare time activities include vandalism and hitting defenseless girls even better; what counts is not being antisocial,” I drawled with feigned nonchalance and irony in my voice.

Sarah’s eyes flashed with a light crimson gleam; she half-growled under her breath. She walked to the entrance faster than normal when we arrived home; although there were no neighbors present it was irresponsible on her part. I grabbed the door before it hit the wall, trying not to smile, satisfied to see her angry. Welcome to the club, I thought.

“You have no right to be so hard on your brother, no right to feel superior to him,” she seethed, fists balled and teeth bared in a display of anger she rarely aimed at me.

“I don’t, I really think he should be my role model,” I replied coldly. She grunted.

“What’s going on?” Cal asked, surprised, approaching us from behind.
